1 Forrest, Leon Divine Days
Chicago Another Chicago Press 1992 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover
Signed and inscribed by Forrest on the title page. Fine in fine dust jacket. The authorís master work was inspired by Ulysses. Forrestís run of bad luck with this book was remarkable. As the Chicago Tribune reported, it began when Toni Morrison, his editor at Random House, left to devote more time to her writing. Without her support. Random House lost interest. Especially since the manuscript was 1829 pages (the book was 1138pp) and nearly impossible to place with a publisher until Another Chicago Press stepped in.. They were already the publisher of the paperback editions of his earlier books, so they were a natural fit. They announced a publication date of April 1992, but they were still proof reading the enormous manuscript when April came and went. Even more important, the press couldnít afford to publish the book. Ultimately the book was published and it found its way to bookstore shelves. It was selling well, but a Christmas time warehouse fire destroyed all the unsold copies. * At the same time, Another Chicago Pressís distributor went out of business, owing the publisher $45,000. The book won the Sun-Timesís $2000 fiction prize, but that created a demand for the book that the publisher couldnít fill. Without the $45,000 from their distributor, they could not afford to reprint the book. * One would think this tale of woe ended there, but there was one more incident the critic who was assigned to review the book for the New York Times died before finishing his review. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1138 pp
