A 20+ page typed letter to a cavalry Captain asking him to extend the military leave of his grandson from 3 to 6 days, so that he and Gompers will be able to rendezvous in Paris in spite of the latter's busy schedule. Gompers's ascendancy to president of the AFL in 1886 led to his recognition as a major labor leader of the US, and President Woodrow Wilson appointed him to be on the Council of National Defense, mobilizing labor for the war effort. At the end of the war Wilson appointed him to the Commission of International Labor Legislation at the Versailles Peace Conference. Both letterhead and signature quite strong, although the type has aged a bit and old folds are present. Very good, framed. ; 8 x 11"; 1 pp
